NASA offers $35,000 to design a space toilet
On Thursday, NASA launched the Lunar Loo challenge to attract innovative solutions to the problem of human waste management in space. Although space toilets already exist and are in use at the International Space Station, they are designed for micro-gravity only. Now the US space agency is calling on the world's inventors to develop a toilet that works not just in micro-gravity, but also lunar gravity. The toilet will be used in a lunar landing spacecraft on the Artemis Mission to the Moon by 2024.
This Lunar Toilet Challenge has a total prize of $35,000 that will be shared among the teams submitting the top three designs in the Technical category. Children under the age of 18 are also encouraged to apply in a "junior" category where the top three participants will receive public recognition and an item of official NASA merchandise. The deadline for the competition is August 17.
