As the world grapples with the COVID-19 Pandemic and movie theaters trying to open up and recuperate lost revenue, UK based LAYER Design has unveiled a futuristic theater seat designed for both safety and comfort.

Although the “Sequel Seat” was in co-development (with a US-based theatre company) 14 months prior to the onset of the pandemic, it has recently gained traction. It features a unique design, full of treats straight from the future. The company has stated that the seats can now be licensed.

In today’s rapidly evolving entertainment landscape, it is essential for the cinema to offer an experience that is significantly differentiated from the growing streaming market.

The Sequel Seat is composed of a copper-infused textile that has anti-bacterial properties. It also features antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral fabrics to add to the safety. Also, the back of the seats, as well as the bag spaces, have UV lighting to kill off any bacteria and/or viruses; the need of the hour.

Conclusion:

This concept could help movie theaters avoid a major economic crisis as many theaters are forced to adopt new strategies to not only increase cash influx but also maintain safety. This design seems like a good alternative to present seat designs which only allow 50% capacity. But, changing each and every seat in theaters would also be a major blow financial blow to theaters already low cash reserves.

It remains to be seen if any company will license and/or sell these seats. Bringing this design to mass production might be alot more expensive and time
